Song Review: Yoon Sanha (Astro) – IDK Me

Astro may not release music as a group anymore, but its members still make solo comebacks from time to time. Last summer, Yoon Sanha dropped a solid album that drew upon funk and hip-hop. That approach continues with new single IDK Me.

Sanha’s one of those “all rounder” idols. I can’t think of one thing he does especially well, but his charm as a performer gives his work character and his years of experience show on stage. IDK Me could be described in a similar way. The song is polished and enjoyable, even if it doesn’t do any one thing particularly well. We’ve heard plenty of pop tracks like this with a light funk sound and incessant bass guitar. IDK Me doesn’t stick out from the pack but delivers its template with enough flair to grab your ear.

I like the splashes of brass that act as exclamation points for the chorus. This compensates for a so-so melody. Overall, there’s not enough variation in the song’s structure to totally sell me, even though the chorus hits hard with those aforementioned instrumental stabs. The song is enjoyable in the moment, but I’d be shocked if I remember it in a few months’ time.
